Certified General Accountant
(CGA) Association received national charter by Act of Parliament in 1913. At present,
there are over 50,000 CGAs and CGA students. CGAs
are guided by a comprehensive Code of Ethics and the same accounting guidelines that
apply to other accounting professions that are chartered by an Act of Parliament.
Certified General Accountants have the knowledge and skills to help
businesses and individuals in the following areas:
- Professional expertise
in accounting, auditing, finance, taxation and related areas.
- Interpretive,
analytical and ethical reasoning skills.
- Practical hands-on experience
in using technology as a management and financial
problem solving tool.
- Assistance in managing
and adapting to technological change within an organization.
- Knowledge and experience
in the design and control of complex information systems.
- Broadly based, practical
business planning, development and management experience.
To receive the CGA designation, an individual must have a university
degree, complete a seven year program of studies which include computer training,
specified public speaking and business writing skills and a minimum of
two years employment experience in a supervisory and/or senior
level of accounting, auditing or financial functions. An integrative final certification
exam must be completed before an individual graduates. Graduates maintain a system of
professional development to ensure they keep up-to-date with changes in tax law and
accounting standards.
